DAY 105-ATHENS, GREECE

Yes, we were in the port for Athens today.  Got this as we were leaving this evening.  It was a cool and cloudy day.  At least it did not rain like in 2013.

BACKGROUND INFO:
Athens is the capital and largest city in Greece with a population of nearly 4 million.  It is referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and birthplace of democracy.  Today we are docked at Piraeus which is the largest passenger port in Europe and not that far from downtown Athens.
When we were here in 2013 it was a rainy day so we canceled our 7 hour tour of the Acropolis and Parthenon and settled for a 3 hour bus tour of the city.  My photos through the wet bus windows were not that great so hoping for better ones today.
Our excursion today, “Acropolis, Plaka, and New Museum” is scheduled for 7 hours and hit’s the major ancient sites.  Rebecca decided not to go on tour today.  The Acropolis is where an ancient settlement or citadel was built on a hill 230 feet above the city with steep sides for defensive purposes.  This is where our tour bus headed first.  On top of this Acropolis is the remains of the Parthenon.  Construction of it was completed in 438 BC and was a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena.  From the Acropolis I walked to the New Museum to view all the surviving treasures of the Acropolis.  I just looooooove museums.  NOT!!!  After that exciting visit I reboarded the bus for a scenic drive through Athens where I saw their Parliament, tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the stadium used for the 2004 Olympics.  The last stop was at the Plaka.  This is the old historical neighborhood of Athens which lies around the northern and eastern slopes of the Acropolis.  Here we enjoyed a traditional Greek lunch followed by some free time to walk around to see the shops and galleries.

WHAT WE DID TODAY:
Sorry but it is now 10:00 pm.  Just back from dinner in Prime 7 and still trying to get today's photos uploaded.  We have not been to this port before.  Captain says rain in tomorrow's forecast so not sure what tomorrow will bring.  I am getting behind!!
Our Canadian friends, Charlie and Pamela Montgomery, boarded today so we will be having dinner with them tomorrow.
Finally got photos on this post.  Bed time for me!!

Here is the link to today's photos, FINALLY!
